ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has warned that the collapse of the Simla Agreement would erase the Line of Control (LoC) between Pakistan and India in the disputed Kashmir region.

The Defence Minister said that in such a case, the LoC would revert to a ceasefire line. He said that India is making efforts to hide its embarrassment from the recent conflict against Pakistan.

In an interview with Aaj News, Khawaja Asif sharply criticised India’s stance on the current military tensions, stating: “India does not want to give the impression that the ceasefire was its own decision. Its arrogance and pride have been buried in dust.”

He accused the Indian government and media of fabricating a false narrative, stating, “The Indian media portrayed the situation like a movie, fueling a marketplace of lies.”

Asif emphasised the significance of the Simla Accord, warning that the Line of Control (LoC) is anchored in the agreement. “If the Simla Agreement collapses, there will be no Line of Control—only a ceasefire line,” he warned.

He further alleged that India’s ruling leadership is under scrutiny for reportedly yielding to US pressure.

The defence minister also mocked India’s denial of recent aerial incidents, remarking, “The world now knows the Rafale’s tail number, yet India still claims they were just drones.”

Reflecting on Pakistan’s past, Asif remarked, “It is our misfortune that we became involved in two wars that were never truly ours—both driven by the compulsions of military dictators.”

India-Pakistan tensions

Tension between India and Pakistan escalated after the April 22 attack in the Pahalgam area of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). India swiftly blamed Pakistan without presenting any credible evidence.

Pakistan condemned the attack and strongly denied the Indian allegations as baseless. Pakistan also offered a neutral and transparent international investigation into the incident. However, New Delhi did not respond to Pakistan’s offer and continued with its aggressive posture.

On the night of May 6-7, India launched a series of air strikes on Pakistan, resulting in civilian casualties. Pakistan responded firmly and downed five Indian fighter jets and destroyed a brigade headquarters and several military posts. Both sides then exchanged missiles, which stretched over the week.

On May 10, when tensions between the two countries peaked, US President Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire had been reached between India and Pakistan.

According to the government, 40 civilians — including 7 women and 15 children — lost their lives in the Indian aggression, and 121 others sustained injuries.
