ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, had responded to concerns raised by UN Human Rights (UNHR) spokesperson Raveena Shamdasani, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to deporting illegal foreigners residing within its borders. Baloch emphasized that Pakistan’s decision applies universally to all undocumented migrants and aligns with both national laws and international principles.

Like any sovereign nation, Pakistan has the legal right to manage its borders and regulate immigration. However, the decision will not impact legally residing foreigners who are holding legal documents. The deportation decision is not directed specifically at Afghan refugees, but rather at all individuals residing illegally in Pakistan. Although Afghan nationals may be the most affected, Pakistan has maintained that the decision is not motivated by nationality but by adherence to legal and humanitarian protocols.

Pakistan’s immigration laws outline the legal status of individuals within its borders. Those found to be undocumented are subject to deportation, a measure deemed necessary to uphold national security and public safety. For any country, managing resources and public services effectively is paramount, especially when strained due to the presence of undocumented and illegal migrants.

Pakistan Ensuring Safe and Dignified Return of Afghans

Meanwhile, Pakistan is adhering to international procedures to ensure the safe and dignified repatriation of Afghan nationals. The government is in constant communication with Interim Afghan Government authorities and is committed to engaging with them on various bilateral matters, including the dignified and safe return of illegal Afghan immigrants.

Pakistan understands the complexity of balancing national sovereignty with human rights obligations. When deportation adheres to legal procedures and humanitarian principles, it does not constitute a violation of human rights. Pakistan has a rich history of providing refuge to Afghan refugees and remains dedicated to its national policy, ensuring the safety and well-being of those in genuine need.

Furthermore, the international community is also responsible for addressing the larger refugee situation. As a responsible nation, Pakistan is legally deporting illegal migrants; however, the international community needs to collaborate and focus on assisting Afghan citizens.

Pakistan’s decision places a collective responsibility on the world to work together in resolving the refugee crisis while respecting the legal prerogatives of sovereign nations.
