Pakistan’s Centuries-Old Buddhist Temple Listed in Top Ten Discoveries

ISLAMABAD: An old Buddhist temple discovered in 2021 in Barikot, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been featured in the top ten discoveries of 2022 by the prestigious Archaeology Magazine.

Barikot is a town located in the KP province. It serves as a gateway town to the picturesque Swat Valley, where thousands of tourists flock each year to enjoy their vacations.

The Gandhara region included part of modern northern Pakistan and northeast areas in Afghanistan. The region is famous for its Gandhara style of art, which is deeply influenced by Hellenistic and Greek traditions.

The area in northwestern Pakistan was a crossing for the exchange of culture and goods among the civilizations of Central Asia and the Middle East since the 6th century B.C.

Archaeologist Luca Maria discovered temple

The old temple, included in the top ten discoveries of 2022, was discovered by archaeologist Luca Maria Olivieri of Ca’ Foscari University, Italy, and his team along Department of Archaeology and museums in December 2021.  – APP
