WASHINGTON: An American newspaper, The Washington Times, has reported that Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir could become as US President Donald Trump’s new strategic partner in South Asia amid deteriorating relations between Washington and New Delhi.
In an analysis published by the American daily, the newspaper described Field Marshal Munir as a man with “nerves of steel,” highlighting his ability to take tough decisions and his reputation as a professional, disciplined and reserved military officer who avoids self-promotion and politics.
The Washington Times noted that Field Marshal Munir’s popularity in Pakistan rose significantly during heightened tensions with India, with his leadership style and resilience earning him wider recognition at home and abroad.
These qualities, according to the report, position Field Marshal Munir as a natural partner for President Trump at a time when US-India relations are under strain.
The newspaper reported that Trump personally intervened to broker a ceasefire between Pakistan and India during a period of rising hostilities.
Pakistan expressed gratitude for the US mediation, whereas Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi denied any third-party involvement.
According to the American newspaper analysis, US-Pakistan ties have recently strengthened in the field of counterterrorism cooperation.

The newspaper reported that Trump’s deteriorating relations with Prime Minister Modi have created new space for Pakistan to strengthen its strategic partnership with Washington.
In this context, Field Marshal Munir is seen as a key figure capable of advancing political and security ties, making his recent meeting with President Trump highly significant.
