NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Eric Adam Sunday joined hundreds of flag-waving Pakistani-Americans in Manhattan to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day with a parade commemorating the 76th anniversary of the establishment of their homeland.

“Happy Independence Day to the Pakistani community,” the mayor extended his wishes as the cheering crowd raised “Pakistan Zindabad” and “Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad” slogans.

Since taking office in January last year, Mayor Adams has been working towards transforming New York City, home to 8.4 million people, into an ‘open city.’ He aims to help numerous migrants pursue the “American Dream,” regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds, by providing opportunities for success, equality, and prosperity.

Mayor Adams recalled about August 16 when Pakistan’s flag was raised at Bowling Green, the city’s oldest park. This historic site was where the British colonial flag was lowered and the Stars and Stripes of America were hoisted in 1783. Last year, he made history by raising Pakistan’s flag alongside the American flag on the country’s 75th anniversary at the same location.

The Parade Committee, responsible for organizing the parade, honored Mayor Adams with a plaque for his contributions to the city and his collaboration with the Pakistani community.

Pakistan’s Acting Consul General in New York, Nawab Adil Ali Khan, attended the parade as a special guest.

Dr. Mahmood Ali, a prominent Pakistani physician, took on the role of Grand Marshal for the parade. He was introduced to the audience by Assad Chaudhry, the finance secretary of the parade committee.

Pakistani Americans enthusiastically cheered the parade as it moved along one of New York City’s main avenues, with units and a band from the New York Police Department (NYPD) leading the way.

A contingent of Pakistani Americans serving in the NYPD also participated in the parade.

Ten beautifully decorated floats, some showcasing Pakistan’s advancements in various fields and others sponsored by local Pakistani businesses, paraded down Madison Avenue.

The floats’ bands played patriotic songs, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The event concluded with an enthralling cultural program that captivated the audience. —APP
