NEW YORK: The Pakistani-American community has united in support of Dania Zaheer, a 25-year-old Pakistani student who was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident in Houston, Texas. Zaheer, who has been in intensive care at a local hospital since the incident on September 7, sustained severe injuries including a broken pelvis, arm, femur, hip, skull fractures, a broken eye socket, and fluid in her lungs.

Zaheer was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near a Houston shopping center. The driver fled the scene and remains unidentified. Despite an eyewitness account, police have yet to gather any additional leads or surveillance footage.

Zaheer, who had recently relocated from Karachi to pursue a master’s degree in business administration, initially felt isolated in her recovery. However, the outpouring of support from local organizations and community leaders has been overwhelming. Salman Razzaqi, president of the Pakistani Association of Greater Houston, described his emotional response upon visiting Zaheer and emphasized the community’s commitment to her recovery.

“We are determined to help her get back on her feet, complete her degree, and achieve her American dream,” Razzaqi stated. The Pakistani Consul General, Aftab Chaudhry, also visited Zaheer, showing solidarity from the diplomatic community.

Houston businessman Ali Sheikhani has stepped in to provide financial support through a foundation established in memory of his late mother. Sheikhani assured Zaheer that her financial concerns would be handled and expressed plans to assist with her school fees. Additionally, efforts are underway to expedite a visa for Zaheer’s parents so they can be by her side during her recovery.

Zaheer, still grappling with her injuries and the uncertainty of her situation, expressed gratitude for the support but requested privacy. “I am thankful for all the help. Please allow trusted organizations to handle the situation from here,” she said.

The community’s response has been heartening, and Razzaqi remains optimistic about Zaheer’s recovery. “We are committed to doing everything in our power to ensure she returns to normal as soon as possible,” he concluded.
