Pakistani Singer Arooj Aftab Again Makes It to Grammy nomination

ISLAMABAD: US-based Pakistani singer, songwriter and producer Arooj Aftab has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Global Music Performance category for her song “Udhero Na” with British-American sitar player, producer and film composer Anoushka Shankar.

This is the second that Arooj Aftab has made it to the Grammy list.

Arooj Aftab composes a variety of musical idioms and styles, such as jazz, minimalism, and neo-Sufi.

Aftab was nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in April 2022 for her song “Mohabbat”.

On Wednesday, the artist made the announcement via Instagram, sharing the New York Times list of all Grammy nominees for 2023 saying “Oh my, oh my, oh my!”

Aftab then sent a video message expressing her feelings about the nomination and Udhero Na. “Oh my god! Udhero Na received a Grammy nomination. Congratulations to Anoushka Shankar, Maeve Gilchrist and Nadje Noordhuis, as well as myself.” Arooj Aftab said how four “badass women” came together to play a song she wrote when she was 15, and how she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves.

“So, I am really emotional and very pleased, and I just, I don’t even know.” I’m in this ship’s hall and we’re due to disembark in about 20 minutes. I’m not sure how I’m going to achieve this, but this is fantastic. So thank you,” she said. “Congratulations!” Aftab captioned this image. Yes, congratulations to you and Anoushka Shankar.”

In the comments section, actor Sarwat Gilani congratulated the actress and wrote, “You’re going girl.” Others who have praised her include singer Jessica Betts, Devonté Hynes aka Blood Orange, singer-songwriter Rachel Eckroth, Indian actress Priyanka Bose, singer Priya Darshini and Never Have I Ever actress Poorna Jagannathan.

Commenting on her video, actor Ushna Shah asked if the nominated song Udhero Na was from that era and if that meant Bolo Na would be re-released for the third Grammy in a row. “Bring them all home!” she exclaimed. Dr. Trans rights activist Mehrub Moiz Awan, pianist Meritxell Neddermann and Spanish singer Marta Sánchez also wished Aftab well.

Sarwat Gilani, the actor, congratulated the star in the comments section and wrote, “You’re going girl.” Among others, singer Jessica Betts, Devonté Hynes, also known as Blood Orange, singer and songwriter Rachel Eckroth, Indian actress Priyanka Bose, singer Priya Darshini or Never Have I Ever actress Poorna Jagannathan have honored her.
