ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday emphasized the importance of implementing job quotas for people with disabilities (PWDs) in the public and private sectors in order to financially empower and incorporate them into society.
The president, who was chairing a follow-up discussion on the rights and facilitation of PWDs, said that PWDs make up almost 12-14% of the country’s population and that efforts should be taken to improve their skills and employ them in public and private sectors.
Representatives from provincial governments, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, as well as senior officials from the ministries of human rights and federal education and professional training, attended the meeting.
It was revealed that NAVTTC had enrolled around 1700 differently-abled people (DAPs) in order to provide them with various skills, as well as free transportation and boarding. According to the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training (M/o FE&PT), training modules for teachers have been devised to instill attitudinal sensitivities in them towards students with disabilities and to enable them to adapt to the particular educational demands of PWDs.
President emphasized no disabled student should be denied entry to school
The president emphasized that no disabled student should be denied entry to any school and that schools should have an adequate number of teachers to educate PWDs. He also advocated for teachers to be trained in order to properly educate students with disabilities at various schools across the country. President Alvi appreciated the work of the ministries of human rights, the federal education and professional training, and special education departments from several provinces in training teachers and master trainers to meet the particular requirements of students with disabilities.
