ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s star bowler Shaheen Afridi has declined the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) offer to become vice-captain for the national side, for the upcoming ICC T20I World Cup, local media reported on Saturday.
According to media reports, the PCB selection committee offered the stylish pacer to become the vice-captain of the team, however, Afridi declined it with thanks.
Earlier during the tenure of Zaka Ashraf, Shaheen Afridi was appointed as skipper of the white-ball game following the team’s humiliating exit in the ICC World Cup 2023.
However, after a defeat from New Zealand Shaheen Afridi step-down and Babar Azam was re-appointed as skipper of the green shirt under the current selection committee.
After the refusal of Shaheen Afridi as vice-captain, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan would be a strong contender for the slot.
Pakistan Squad for T20I World Cup 2024
Earlier on Friday, PCB announced 15 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, which begins on June 1 and will be played in the United States and West Indies till 29th June.
Babar Azam (c), Saim Ayub, Mohammad Rizwan, Azam Khan, Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Usman Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf.
The green shirt would leave for the US after completing the ongoing T20 series against England. The first match of the series has been washed out by rain and bad weather.
