ISLAMABAD: Naila Kiani became the first Pakistani woman to climb Mount Lhotse in Nepal on Tuesday morning, becoming the first Pakistani woman to do so.

First Pakistani to climb the mountain without the use of supplemental oxygen

At 8,516 meters, Lhotse is the world’s fourth highest mountain, after Mount Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga. Naila Kiani achieved the feat just two days after summiting Mount Everest. Aside from Kiani, Pakistani mountaineer Sajid Ali Sadpara also reached the peak of Everest. Sadpara, on the other hand, became the first Pakistani to climb the mountain without “supplemental oxygen and personal sherpa assistance.”

Kiani has reached the five 8000-meter peaks: Everest, K2, Annapurna, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II. Kiani’s expedition organizers in Nepal reported that she reached the top of Lhotse at 8:13 a.m. local time this morning. Kiani is the first Pakistani woman to reach the summit of Lhotse and the fastest woman in Pakistan to climb six peaks higher than 8,000 metres, according to Karrar Haidri of the Alpine Club of Pakistan.

Mount Annapurna rescue

Kiani was one of two Pakistani mountaineers rescued last month while descending Mount Annapurna. She was accompanied on her ascent to an 8,091m high peak in Nepal by the world’s youngest mountaineer, Shehroze Kashif. The two climbers were rescued from the mountain top a day after reaching the top as their descent was hindered by poor weather. Kiani’s ascent of Annapurna made her the first woman from a South Asian country to accomplish the feat.
