WASHINGTON: The Library of Congress, the research arm of the US Congress, awarded a Pakistani organization that promotes literacy and reading, the 2023 Literacy Award for successfully executing literacy programmes throughout Pakistan.
The Islamabad-based Pakistan Alliance for Girls Education (PAGE) was among 15 top organizations worldwide to receive the prestigious ‘Successful Practices Honoree Award.’
In her address at the embassy, Fajer Pasha, the Executive Director of PAGE (Pakistan Alliance for Girls Education), expressed deep gratitude for recognizing the dedicated services of her organization by the Library of Congress. She also noted the unwavering commitment of the government and people of Pakistan to the cause of education.
During a call with Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, both engaged in a conversation where he congratulated Pasha and her team for their substantial contributions towards advancing literacy in Pakistan.
The Pakistan Alliance for Girls Education was established in 2014 and is dedicated to creating an enabling environment for gender equity in education, leadership, and employment throughout Pakistan.
Their mission includes empowering girls in Pakistan by providing them with quality education and leadership opportunities.
Fajer also highlighted PAGE’s recognition by prestigious institutions, such as UNESCO and the Global Award for Girls and Women’s Education 2023 from China.
Ambassador Khan emphasized the government’s top priority in the education sector, particularly girls’ education. He promised to continue support for endeavors that promote education, especially in remote areas of Pakistan.
Furthermore, Ambassador Khan noted a 17% increase in the number of Pakistani students who pursued their education in the United States last year, totaling over 8,000. He shared their aim to double this number and highlighted the positive response from the United States government in this regard. —APP
