ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday welcomed the ceasefire understanding between Iran and Israel, urging the relevant parties to honour the truce and prioritise diplomatic engagement to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said Pakistan also welcomed and supports the efforts aimed at reviving dialogue and diplomacy in the region.

“Pakistan welcomes the announcement of the ceasefire understanding between Iran and Israel and calls on the relevant parties to uphold the ceasefire. We also welcome and support the efforts aimed at reviving dialogue and diplomacy in the region,” the spokesperson said.

Reiterating Islamabad’s stance on conflict resolution, the statement added: “Pakistan believes that peace and stability in the region can only be achieved through strict adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and by refraining from the use of force.”

The spokesperson further affirmed that Pakistan “will continue to support all efforts” aimed at fostering peace, signalling its commitment to multilateral diplomacy.

Pakistan reiterates support for Iran

Earlier, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian and discussed the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East.

PM Sharif emphasised the importance of restoring peace through dialogue and diplomacy, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

The Prime Minister reiterated Pakistan’s support for Iran at all diplomatic forums, including at the UN Security Council and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), while calling for adherence to international law and the UN Charter principles by all sides.

President Pezeshkian thanked the Prime Minister for the telephone call and appreciated Pakistan’s consistent and principled support of Iran throughout the crisis.

The Iranian President also acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The two leaders agreed on the importance of unity among the Ummah during this most challenging time. They agreed to remain in touch.

Iran-Israel ceasefire holds

A fragile ceasefire in the Iran-Israel war appeared to be holding on Tuesday, after 12 days of strikes that saw Israel and the United States pummel the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites.

US President Donald Trump said that Israel and Iran had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire” soon after Iran launched a limited missile attack Monday on a US military base in Qatar.

In a fast-moving series of declarations, the US President, who was on his way to attend a NATO summit in The Hague, posted on his Truth Social app that “the Ceasefire is in effect!”

“ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home while doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave’ to Iran. Nobody will be hurt,” Trump wrote.
