UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has warned against the potential negative consequences of protracted conflicts, saying that prolonged wars carry a greater risk of miscalculation, escalation and spillover effects that could threaten regional and global peace and security.

The warning came during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, convened at Romania’s request over the reported violation of its airspace.

Delivering Pakistan’s national statement, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reiterated Islamabad’s continued advocacy of dialogue and diplomacy for the peaceful settlement of the Ukraine conflict.

He said that conflicts that remain active for longer periods increase the likelihood of escalation, and, regrettably, such a pattern was being witnessed at present.

“Further escalation only risks transforming this crisis into a larger confrontation with wider implications for regional and global peace and security,” Ambassador Asim told the Security Council.

Taking note of Romania’s request to convene the meeting, the Pakistani envoy reaffirmed Pakistan’s unequivocal support for the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all states, as enshrined in the UN Charter.

He said these principles form the bedrock of interstate relations and must always be fully respected.

Destruction of civilian infrastructure

Ambassador Asim termed the reported incursion of armed drones into the airspace of neighbouring countries alarming and expressed Pakistan’s deep regret over the reported civilian casualties and destruction of civilian infrastructure resulting from such incidents.

He noted that the conflict in Ukraine has introduced a precarious dimension to modern warfare through the relentless use of armed drones.

While acknowledging their impact on battlefield dynamics, he said the evolving humanitarian challenges associated with these technologies remain a matter of concern and should be addressed within the framework of international humanitarian law and its principles.

Calling for an end to the conflict, Ambassador Asim underlined the need for renewed commitment to the core principles of the UN Charter, genuine accommodation of the legitimate security interests of all sides and adherence to existing multilateral instruments.

“We, therefore, see an early resumption of the United States-facilitated dialogue process as the most credible path forward. This channel, if reinvigorated, can provide a mutually acceptable way out of this devastating conflict,” he said.

The Pakistani envoy stressed that military means could not bring lasting peace to the region and emphasised the need for sustained and meaningful dialogue.

He also underscored the imperative of an immediate and complete cessation of hostilities and urged all parties to recommit sincerely to the path of peace.
