ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening engagement with Iran in key areas with a particular focus on trade and economic cooperation.

This came during an inter-ministerial meeting on Pakistan–Iran bilateral relations, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Friday, a Foreign Office statement said.

The meeting reviewed ongoing cooperation across a range of sectors and discussed ways to further enhance economic and trade ties. Ishaq Dar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to deepening engagement with Iran in key priority areas.

It may be recalled that last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had met with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the International Year of Peace and Trust summit in Ashgabat.

Iran and Pakistan share a 900-kilometre border, which they aim to develop as a channel for enhancing transport and energy cooperation.

The two countries reached an agreement to revive the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) freight train service last year, in a move aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating cross-border trade between the two nations.

Islamabad and Tehran have voiced their desire in recent months to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion.

In August last year, Pakistan and Iran had decided to boost bilateral agricultural trade to $3 billion within two years. The two countries signed a joint communique at the end of the visit of a high-level ministerial delegation of Pakistan, led by Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, to Tehran.
