BAKU: Uzbekistan and Pakistan recently held discussions on transport and communication projects underway in Afghanistan.
The dialogue took place in a meeting between Asif Durrani, the Special Representative of the Prime Minister of Pakistan for Afghanistan and Ismatulla Irgashev, Uzbekistan’s Presidential Special Representative for Afghanistan, according to media Uzbek media reports.
A primary topic of talks was the construction of the Termez-Mazar-I-Sharif-Kabul-Peshawar railway line. The Pakistani delegation stressed the project’s importance in enhancing regional connectivity.
The representatives also discussed the current situation in Afghanistan and the role of the global community.
Both sides further explored opportunities to expand their collaborative efforts in Afghanistan.
Railway project of Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan
The recent meeting was built on the momentum from February 2021, when Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan inked a roadmap for constructing the Termez-Mazar-I-Sharif-Kabul-Peshawar railway.
The project, estimated to cost around 5 billion dollars, is aimed to establish a transport corridor capable of handling up to twenty million tons of cargo.
The corridor is likely to link countries across Europe, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Pakistan, India, and potentially extend to Southeast Asian states.
