ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United States on Saturday reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen and diversify bilateral relations, focusing on areas of mutual interest.

The resolve was made during a meeting between Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch and a visiting US Congressional delegation in Islamabad on Saturday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office stated in a press release.

The US delegation, which included Congressmen Jack Bergman, Tom Suozzi, and Jonathan Jackson, met with Baloch to discuss ways to deepen ties between the two nations.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, both sides agreed on the importance of advancing their relationship across various sectors, including trade, defence, and regional stability.

Earlier this week, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to address concerns over US tariffs on Pakistani goods.

During the meeting, it was decided that a delegation would be sent to the US to engage directly with the US administration and discuss the tariffs as well as broader trade relations.

Prime Minister Sharif has directed that prominent businessmen and exporters should also be included in the delegation. He said Pakistan enjoys strong business ties with the United States spanning over several decades.

In his remarks, the Prime Minister expressed the government’s determination to resolve the tariff issue and enhance the trade partnership between the two countries.

“The government is committed to addressing the concerns surrounding the tariffs and intends to strengthen our economic relationship with the United States,” the Prime Minister said in the meeting.

The Prime Minister was also briefed on recent developments regarding the tariffs, including reports submitted by Pakistan’s embassy in Washington, which has been in regular contact with the US administration.

The US had imposed a 29 percent tariff on imports from Pakistan under the administration of President Donald Trump.

Pakistan maintains a trade surplus of approximately US$ 3.3 billion with the United States, with ongoing efforts to maintain and grow this trade balance.
