NEW YORK: Pakistan has urged the United Nations for “emergency action” to support the poorest nations and carry out structural changes to address deficiencies causing inequality among countries.
Talking to students from a United States university, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to United Nations Ambassador Aamir Khan said that the developing nations now face triple finance, food, and fuel crises.
The crises that the Pakistani ambassador talk about stem from a series of recent external “shocks” to the global economy including the coronavirus pandemic, the spike in the rates of commodities and goods, the increasing frequency and severity of the impacts of climate change and growing conflicts.
He said that these crises have disproportionately hit the poorest people, backtracking the gains of decades of development, pushing millions of people under extreme poverty.
The envoy said that Pakistan had a long history of constructive leadership and active participation at the UN on issues ranging from security, human rights, development and others.
He said that Pakistan was one of the major contributors of forces to the UN peacekeeping – contributing 200,000 personnel to 47 UN peacekeeping missions.
Pakistan’s primary aim at UN
Khan said that Pakistan’s primary aim at the UN was to secure the recognised right to self-determination of the people of the Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Pakistan welcomed the UN Secretary-General’s statement that the Kashmir dispute should be resolved on the basis of the United Nations Charter and the Security Council resolutions, which say that the “final disposition” of the valley will be determined through a fair and free plebiscite under the UN auspices.
He said that Pakistan will continue to demand for the implementation of the Security Council resolutions.
