PARIS: Pakistan’s Ambassador to France, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, on Wednesday stressed the need for ambitious global action to protect oceans.
She made the remarks at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference underway in Nice, France.
Highlighting the country’s efforts to address the challenge of degradation of marine resources and ecosystems, she said that Pakistan called for ambitious global action to protect oceans for future generations.
She expressed Pakistan’s intention to become a signatory to the Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction, commonly known as the BBNJ Agreement.

She stressed the importance of international collaboration to conserve and sustainably use marine and coastal resources.
The Ambassador called for scaling up financing, technology transfer, and capacity building to protect oceans.
She voiced Pakistan’s concern over the serious environmental impact on the Arabian Sea caused by unilateral actions taken by a neighbouring country, which have disrupted long-standing cooperative water-sharing agreements.
The ambassador called on the international community to denounce the use of water as a tool of coercion and stressed the need to uphold international law and honour treaty commitments.
