ISLAMABAD:  Pakistan has announced to upgrade its diplomatic ties with Afghanistan from chargé d’affaires to the level of ambassador.

This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in a statement on X on Friday.

“Pakistan-Afghanistan relations are on a positive trajectory after my very productive visit to Kabul with Pakistan delegation on 19th April 2025. To maintain this momentum, I am pleased to announce the decision of the Government of Pakistan to upgrade the level of its Chargé d’Affaires in Kabul to the level of Ambassador,” Dar said.

“I am confident this step would further contribute towards enhanced engagement, deepen Pak-Afghan cooperation in economic, security, CT & trade areas and promote further exchanges between two fraternal countries,” he added.

It may be recalled that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, on May 22, said that Afghanistan has assured both Pakistan and China during the trilateral meeting in Beijing that the Afghan soil would not be used for terrorism and the Taliban government would curb terrorism.

Dar highlighted his government’s commitment to improving ties with Afghanistan. “We have religious, cultural, historical, and geographical ties with Afghanistan. Our outreach was welcomed across Afghan society. We need to progress beyond the charge d’affaires level and engage substantively.”

He announced an extension of the transit document regime for Afghan drivers and vehicles until June 30 and introduced a single document regime of $100 multiple-entry visa for Afghan citizens. “These initiatives were deeply appreciated by Afghan officials,” he noted.

Ishaq Dar visits Kabul

Last month, Ishaq Dar paid a day-long visit to Kabul to address Islamabad’s concerns over cross-border militancy and followed the latest round of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Coordination Committee meeting held in Kabul.

“Both countries will strictly deal with such elements. If someone does [carry out such activities], then we both will be responsible for taking action against them,” he said after meeting several senior Afghan officials.

Ishaq Dar told a press conference that Pakistan’s security concerns had been conveyed to the Afghan side, adding that Pakistan’s concerns on security issues were heard by the Afghan side and they assured their full cooperation.
