Pakistan Ulema Council Strongly Condemns Jaranwala Incidents

ISLAMABAD: Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Ashrafi, Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC), has denounced the desecration of the Holy Quran and the violent assaults on Christian places of worship and residences in Jaranwala, Faisalabad.

In response to the recent acts of violence and the disregard for religious sentiments, Ashrafi announced the creation of a joint delegation comprising notable figures from the PUC and the International Interfaith Harmony Council (IIHC) to rectify the situation in Jaranwala and restore tranquility.

What Happened in Jaranwala?

Tahir Ashrafi, who also holds the position of President of the IIHC, emphasized the deeply regrettable and condemnable nature of the incident involving the desecration of the Holy Quran. He noted that this incident had sparked intense reactions, leading to escalated tensions in the Jaranwala.

Ashrafi underscored the foundational principles of Islam that prioritize social peace, unity, and security. He emphasized the duty of the Muslim majority and the State to unequivocally safeguard the rights and well-being of non-Muslim citizens.

Tahir Ashrafi urged local religious leaders and authorities to collaboratively work towards positive societal transformation. He emphasized the significance of effective collaboration and liaison to usher in positive changes.

Ashrafi called for the establishment of a high-level committee to probe the incident. He stressed the importance of ensuring a comprehensive and impartial inquiry to address all aspects of the situation.

Ashrafi pressed the government to evaluate the losses endured by the Christian community and take swift and decisive action against those responsible for the attacks. Additionally, he called for the perpetrators of the desecration of the Holy Quran to be held accountable.
