ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s military said on Thursday that it has signed a deal to sell JF-17 Block III (Thunder) fighter jets to Azerbaijan.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), media affairs wing of the Pakistan Army, stated that the agreement aims to enhance Azerbaijan’s air power.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev was briefed on the aircraft’s combat capabilities during his visit to the South Asian country in July.

The JF-17 Thunder is an advanced lightweight fighter developed through a joint venture between the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Kamra (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation of China (CAC).

According to PAC’s website, the JF-17 boasts “excellent air-to-air and air-to-surface combat capabilities,” along with “state-of-the-art avionics, optimally integrated sub-systems, computerized flight controls, and the ability to employ the latest weapons.”

The ISPR said that this agreement will strengthen the friendly relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan. A statement from the President’s office on Wednesday confirmed that the jets have already been integrated into Azerbaijan’s Air Force.
