ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will pocket USD 480,000 from the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) record prize pool for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 cycle, despite finishing at the bottom of the standings in ninth place.
Pakistan’s journey began on a promising note with a 2-0 series sweep against Sri Lanka. However, fortunes quickly turned as Pakistan endured a series of disappointing results.
A 3-0 drubbing by Australia on their home turf marked a tough start for Shan Masood in his maiden series as red-ball captain.
Matters deteriorated further when Pakistan suffered a shock 2-0 series defeat at home to Bangladesh, setting an unwelcome record under Shan’s leadership. The team managed a brief resurgence, clinching a hard-fought 2-1 home series win over England.
However, any remaining hopes of qualifying for the WTC Final were extinguished following a demoralising 2-0 loss in South Africa. Pakistan wrapped up their WTC campaign on another low point, drawing 1-1 with the West Indies in a two-match home series.
ICC prize
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a record prize pool of USD 5.76 million for the WTC 2023–25 cycle, more than double that of the previous two editions.
The winners of the WTC Final, set to be held at Lord’s, will receive USD 3.6 million, while the runners-up will take home USD 2.16 million.
Despite finishing last, Pakistan will still receive USD 480,000 as part of the prize distribution. India, which secured third place, will be awarded USD 1.44 million, while New Zealand, in fourth, will earn USD 1.2 million.
England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the West Indies—who finished fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively—will receive USD 960,000, USD 840,000, USD 720,000, and USD 600,000.
