ISLAMABAD: Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam has revealed plans of the government to launch Kisan TV channel to promote climate-friendly agriculture.

In a statement on Sunday, she said the idea of this channel aims to educate farmers on climate adaptation strategies, sustainable practices and disaster management techniques to mitigate environmental issues.

The PM’s aide said the channel will leverage the services of Pakistan Television (PTV) to broadcast programs in six different regional languages, ensuring that vulnerable communities receive timely information.

She added the programs will be telecast through local PTV stations at the provincial level to maximize local reach.

Romina Khurshid Alam also engaged with a private channel to promote the programs of the Climate Ministry. She stressed the importance of media support in enhancing climate change coverage.

The coordinator noted the Kisan TV channel will provide timely information and guidance to farmers on adapting to climate-related challenges, including weather alerts. She said the TV channel will also feature programs promoting gender empowerment, women’s income generation and environmental sustainability.

She added the government seeks to help farmers with knowledge and tools to build resilience against climate change.

She went on to say that media teams from relevant climate change departments and Kisan TV will collaborate to boost the efforts of the ministry to protect the socio-economic impacts of climate change on the farmers.

During different meetings last month over flood and heat waves, the PM’s aide directed relevant institutions to strengthen media teams to inform vulnerable communities about climate change timely.

She said the objective is to sensitize the media to report on climate change before potential flash flooding and glacial lake outbursts.

Romina Khurshid Alam is hopeful that this new Kisan TV channel initiative will be a groundbreaking step towards a more climate-resilient agricultural sector in Pakistan.
