ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will transfer the chair of the President of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Chamber of Commerce and Industry to Bangladesh tomorrow (May 24) for a term of two years.
The outgoing President of the SAARC Chamber, Iftikhar Ali Malik, will fork up command of the Chamber to Jashim Uddin, President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), at a ceremony will be held at Dhaka.
Jashim Uddin is Chairman of Bengal Commercial Bank Limited, Chairman of Desh General Insurance, Vice Chairman of Bengal Group of Industries, and a distinguished philanthropist, said a press release on Tuesday.
Pakistan served SAARC, an association of the eight national federation chambers of Commerce and Industry of the SAARC member states, for two years.
Iftikhar Ali Malik said the rationale behind creating the Chamber of the SAARC nations was to promote industry and trade in the region and develop and achieve mutual objectives in trade and industry. Moreover, the SAARC Chamber is also known as the private sector’s voice across the region.
He said that since the creation of SAARC, Pakistan had played a crucial role in making this august forum for promoting and strengthening regional economic integration and connectivity among all member countries.
