TASHKENT: Pakistan made a dream start to their maiden campaign at the FIVB Boys’ U19 Volleyball World Championship, overpowering world number seven Belgium in straight sets in their opening match on Thursday.

Ranked 19th in the world and appearing at the tournament for the first time, Pakistan stunned the higher-ranked Belgian side with an emphatic 3-0 victory, taking the sets 25-19, 25-17, and 25-22.

The result not only marked a historic win for Pakistan but also signalled their arrival on the global volleyball stage.

Captain Yahya led the team with composure and grit, contributing 11 points, while middle blocker Saud was the standout performer with 13 points — nine from attacks and four from blocks.

Pakistan outclass Belgium in all key areas, registering 32 attacks, 11 blocks, and two service points, compared to Belgium’s 28, six, and one respectively.

The Pakistani side also capitalised effectively on Belgium’s errors, gaining 30 points from unforced mistakes.

Their all-round display included 70 digs, 63 receptions, and 111 sets, reflecting the team’s solid coordination, sharp defence, and effective net play.

Among other contributors, Jibran scored 7 points, Ajmal and Muhtad chipped in with 5 each, while setter Abu Bakar added 2 points.

The team’s organised defence and disciplined structure proved vital in neutralising Belgium’s attacking threats.

Pakistan entered the Pool A clash as clear underdogs, but their performance displayed a blend of skill, focus, and determination.

Their commanding win over a top-10 side has sent a strong message to the rest of the 24-nation field competing in this prestigious global youth event.

Pakistan will next face hosts Uzbekistan in their second group-stage encounter on Friday.
