NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani emphasized the importance of implementing UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir to ensure regional peace and reduce the arms race between Pakistan and India.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Jilani stated that the failure to implement these resolutions directly affects regional peace, hampers the development of both Pakistan and India, and impedes the progress of SAARC (South Asian Association of Regional Countries).
Jilani noted that Kashmir is a critical issue in Pakistan-India relations, particularly in the context of UNSC resolutions calling for an impartial plebiscite based on the Kashmiris’ aspirations. He expressed regret that these resolutions have remained unimplemented for over 70 years.
Kashmir Issue’s Impact on Regional Peace
Highlighting the dire situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Jilani mentioned the heavy presence of Indian troops and widespread human rights violations in the region. He described IIOJK as a “human prison” where people are denied their rights, and their leaders are detained by India. He pointed out that this longstanding dispute has led to wars and constant tension between Pakistan and India.
Jilani stressed that it is the responsibility of the UNSC to ensure the implementation of its resolutions. When asked about the comparison between Kashmir and Palestine, he noted that both regions face denial of justice, highlighting his attendance at the OIC Contact Group on Palestine meeting during the UN General Assembly session, where he expressed Pakistan’s solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Regarding climate change, Jilani described it as a significant challenge for Pakistan, which is among the ten most negatively affected countries. He mentioned the devastating impact of climate-related disasters in Pakistan, expressing gratitude to the UN Secretary-General for his assistance and for organizing a conference in Geneva to address Pakistan’s climate challenges.
Foreign Minister Jilani emphasized the need for the timely implementation of resolutions, whether related to Kashmir or Palestine, and the importance of addressing climate change for Pakistan’s future well-being.
