NEW YORK: In a recent open debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Famine and Conflict-Induced Global Food Security, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Aamir Khan reiterated the need for the implementation of UNSC resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.
The Ambassador called for a UN-supervised plebiscite to enable Kashmiris to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.
He highlighted the importance of the international community ensuring that economic deprivation and food insecurity are not exploited by the Indian occupation to suppress the legitimate freedom struggle of the Kashmiri people. The ongoing conflict in the valley has exacerbated the food crisis, making it imperative for a just and lasting solution to be found.
The Ambassador emphasized that the most effective way to address food insecurity in conflict zones is to cease the use of force and violence and seek durable solutions to these conflicts. By doing so, the international community can play a vital role in alleviating the suffering of millions affected by these crises.
Pakistani envoy highlights Afghanistan situation
During his address, Ambassador Aamir Khan also drew attention to the situation in Afghanistan, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to providing support to the 29 million Afghans in need of humanitarian assistance. He also expressed Pakistan’s dedication to helping revive Afghanistan’s economy during these challenging times.
Furthermore, the Ambassador called for the early end of the war in Ukraine in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter and international agreements. He praised the UN Secretary-General’s Black Sea Grain initiative, which seeks to mitigate the impact of the conflict and related restrictions on food security in the region.
Ambassador Khan expressed hope that this initiative would be revived promptly with the agreement of all parties involved and be effectively and comprehensively implemented.
