ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has emphasised the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law as essential measures to promote de-escalation and maintain stability in the Middle East and the broader region.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation on Thursday with Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand @AnitaAnand, a Foreign Office statement said.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and explored ways to further enhance economic cooperation across key sectors, including agriculture, clean energy, and critical minerals, while also focusing on strengthening people-to-people ties.

Foreign Minister Anand praised the vibrant Pakistani diaspora in Canada.

Both sides highlighted the importance of sustained high-level exchanges to maintain the positive momentum in bilateral engagement.

They also reviewed evolving regional developments, with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister underscoring the need for dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law to support de-escalation and stability in the Middle East and the wider region.

Middle East tensions

Meanwhile, the United States and Israel remain engaged in military operations against Iran.

The confrontation escalated after US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prompting Iranian missile and drone attacks on Israel and US military installations in the Gulf.

The widening conflict has raised fears of a broader regional war, making any demonstration of strategic military capability particularly sensitive.

US defence officials, however, said routine testing of strategic missiles is essential to ensure that the country’s nuclear forces remain ready and credible as part of its deterrence strategy.
