Pakistan Set to Host ECO Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk on Jan 21

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to host the 10th Ministerial Meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) on Disaster Risk Reduction in Islamabad from January 21.

According to a Prime Minister’s Office statement National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is hosting from 21 to 22 January 2026 at NDMA Headquarters.

Pakistan is hosting the ECO Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction for the first time, underscoring the country’s growing leadership in regional disaster resilience and cooperation.

This high-level gathering will bring together ministers and senior officials from ECO member states, along with representatives from the ECO Secretariat and regional and international partner organisations.

The meeting aims to enhance regional cooperation on disaster risk reduction and climate resilience, with a focus on strengthening coordination mechanisms, harmonising frameworks, and improving preparedness for transboundary and climate-related hazards across the ECO region.

Special emphasis will be placed on leveraging technological solutions, data sharing, early warning systems, and innovative practices to address the evolving risk landscape and promote regional resilience.

Delegations from ECO Member States, including Pakistan, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan, will participate in the two-day gathering.

The proceedings will commence with a High-Level Working Group Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction, followed by the Ministerial Meeting on 22 January 2026, during which key regional initiatives and the draft Islamabad Declaration will be considered for endorsement.

Hosting the 10th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction highlights Pakistan’s commitment to regional solidarity and its dedication to fostering coordinated, inclusive, and forward-looking strategies for disaster risk reduction, while emphasising innovation and technology as key drivers of sustainable resilience across the ECO region.
