QUETTA, Pakistan: Pakistan’s security forces have killed 47 “Indian proxy” terrorists during an operation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Balochistan province, security sources said on Tuesday.

The operation, carried out between August 7 and 9 in the Sambaza area of Zhob district near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, targeted a large group of terrorists of “Indian proxy” Fitna al-Khwaraj. The term Fitna al-Khwaraj refers to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to security sources, the terrorists were attempting to infiltrate into Balochistan from across the border when they were intercepted.

“Most of those killed were Afghan nationals,” security sources said, adding that the elimination of the terrorist group prevented potential major attacks inside Pakistan.

The bodies of the terrorists remained at the site under the open sun until 25 August, when Afghan authorities removed them following a jirga, or tribal council meeting, held at the border, security sources added.

Security sources hailed the operation as a “major counter-terrorism success,” crediting intelligence and security agencies for neutralising the threat before the terrorists could strike.

Pakistan has faced a surge in cross-border militancy since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

Provinces bordering Afghanistan, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, have borne the brunt of brutal terrorist attacks.

According to data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), an Islamabad-based think tank, the country recorded 78 terrorist incidents in June alone, which left at least 100 people dead.

The victims included 53 security personnel, 39 civilians, six terrorists and two members of local peace committees. Another 189 people were injured during the month, most of them security officials.
