ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has secured a tuna quota of 25,000 metric tonnes from the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), marking a significant development for the country’s fisheries sector and export potential.

According to a statement issued on Saturday, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the quota includes 15,000 tonnes of yellowfin tuna and 10,000 tonnes of skipjack. The allocation is expected to generate around $200 million in exports, providing a major boost to the national economy.

Speaking on World Tuna Day, the minister highlighted the importance of tuna in supporting global food security, livelihoods and economic stability, and called for coordinated efforts to ensure sustainable fishing practices.

He noted that Pakistan has made steady progress in bringing its fisheries sector in line with international conservation standards. While annual tuna catch exceeds 45,000 tonnes, a significant portion has remained undocumented due to unregulated fishing practices.

The government is working to address this through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy.

International partnerships

The minister also underscored Pakistan’s growing role in international fisheries management, noting that a senior official from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs has been elected chair of the IOTC’s Standing Committee on Administration and Finance — the first time in 28 years.

Efforts are also underway to phase out harmful fishing methods such as gillnetting and trawling, with a shift towards more sustainable longlining techniques aimed at reducing bycatch and protecting marine ecosystems.

With improved infrastructure at fisheries harbours and increased certification standards, Pakistan is aiming to expand its presence in international markets, particularly in Europe.

“Pakistan’s tuna sector is at a critical juncture, with sustainable quotas, policy reforms and strong international partnerships paving the way for long-term economic growth, environmental protection and increased foreign exchange earnings,” the minister said.
