NEW YORK: Pakistan’s permanent envoy to the United Nations, Ambassador Munir Akram, on Wednesday told an emergency meeting of the UNSC that Islamabad supports an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Pakistan Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

Russia, China, and the UAE convened the UNSC meeting to discuss the deteriorating situation in the Gaza, APP reported.  Pakistan also expressed regret over the US veto on a UNSC resolution earlier in the day that would have called for “humanitarian pauses” to provide life-saving help to millions of people in Gaza.

Referring to today’s vote, Pakistan’s envoy Akram said, “Although the Brazilian resolution required sizable improvement in our view, we were amazed at the UNSC’s inability to approve it due to the veto cast by a permanent member of the UNSC.”

He said, “A heavy accountability rests on those who have contributed to the prolongation of constant bombing of Gaza’s people that is taking place.”

He also regretted that the UNSC was unable to issue a call for a ceasefire, due to the opposition for the resolution suggested by the Russia a day before, and the Brazilian resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Ambassador Akram said, “Today is the 11th day of relentless, terrible Israeli strikes on Gaza. Gaza is under militarily blockade, and all humanitarian aid channels, electricity, and water have been cut off. The whole population of Gaza including children, women, and elderly persons are being collectively punished by the indiscriminate Israeli strikes.

He said Pakistan strongly condemned Israeli air strikes and military incursions into Gaza, the killing of civilian population, and the large-scale displacement of an already occupied people.

He also strongly condemned Israel’s criminal and cowardly attack on the Al-Ahley hospital in Gaza, killing hundreds, mostly children, women and men.
