ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir Khan informed the National Assembly (NA) on Monday that 230 billion rupees worth of power theft was recorded in one year across Pakistan.
The minister told the NA that the country’s total circular debt till December 2022 had reached 2536 billion rupees, while the circular debt for this year is 343 billion rupees. The line losses have also hiked to 113 billion rupees.

The figures regarding the circular debt were submitted to the NA by the Ministry of Power.
He said that legislation would be made to end the power theft in the country.
Earlier, the federal government sought the surcharge imposition on electricity consumers to recover 335 billion rupees.
It filed a plea with the NEPRA asking for the imposition of a surcharge of up to Rs.3.23paisas/unit.
