ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reiterated its firm stance on negotiations with India, emphasizing that peace in South Asia hinges on resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, according to a statement from the Foreign Office on Wednesday.
The spokesperson highlighted Pakistan’s readiness to support solutions within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and noted that the country has put forward various initiatives to address the issue.
The Foreign Office also indicated that details regarding Pakistan’s representation at the upcoming UN General Assembly (UNGA) session and the UN Future Summit will be disclosed soon. The spokesperson reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding support for the right of self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
On regional matters, the Prime Minister has invited heads of SCO member states to an upcoming summit in Islamabad, underscoring Pakistan’s commitment to regional cooperation. The spokesperson also addressed recent developments with Afghanistan, confirming an unprovoked border attack by Afghan forces on September 7, which led to a strong response from Pakistan. Diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue are ongoing.
Regarding relations with the U.S., the spokesperson emphasized continuous engagement through multiple channels. On the economic front, Pakistan and China are working to enhance bilateral trade and economic ties, with a particular focus on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, which is crucial for Pakistan’s energy security.
The spokesperson concluded by mentioning that further information on Pakistani national Asif Merchant’s status is awaited.
