ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed Islamabad’s strong condemnation of the recent Israeli “aggression” against Iran and extended the nation’s heartfelt sympathies to Iran over the “martyrdom of innocent civilians”.

Prime Minister Sharif met with Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam on the occasion of the Pakistan International Maritime Expo and Conference, the PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.

While discussing the current regional situation, the Prime Minister expressed Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran and its people during this period of heightened tension.

PM Sharif referred to his recent telephone conversation with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, noting that Pakistan had voiced its support for Iran during the United Nations Security Council meeting.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the Israeli attacks constituted a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law.

During his call with President Pezeshkian, the premier urged the international community and the United Nations to take urgent and credible steps to put an end to Israel’s aggressive behaviour and its illegal actions.

He stated that Pakistan was fully committed to promoting peace in the region and stood ready to play its role in this context.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, said Iran has every right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Unjustified and illegitimate aggression

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivering the country’s official stance during a United Nations Security Council briefing, strongly condemned Israeli military strikes on Iran, calling them “unjustified and illegitimate aggression.”

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad asserted that Israel’s actions were a “grave danger” to regional and global peace.

Pakistan stands in resolute solidarity with the brotherly people of Iran. We offer our sympathies and condolences on the loss of life and damages due to these heinous attacks,” he said.

On Friday, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, also spoke by phone to the Foreign Minister of Iran, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, to discuss the Israel-Iran conflict.
