ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been re-elected to the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the 2026–2028 term, following elections held during the 30th Session of the Conference of States Parties (CSP-30) in The Hague from November 24–28, 2025.

The OPCW, established under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), is tasked with the global elimination of chemical weapons and the promotion of the peaceful use of chemistry, according to a statement released by the Foreign Office on Wednesday.

The 193-member treaty is widely regarded as the most successful disarmament initiative, having eliminated an entire class of weapons of mass destruction.

The Executive Council serves as the Organisation’s principal policy-making body, overseeing compliance with the Convention and supporting scientific and economic development among its members.

Pakistan, a signatory to the CWC since 1997, has been an active participant in the OPCW and has consistently contributed to the implementation of the Convention.

The country regularly hosts OPCW inspections at relevant facilities and has played a constructive role in advancing the Organisation’s objectives.

The re-election of Pakistan to the 41-member Executive Council underscores the confidence of OPCW Member States in Pakistan’s ability to provide effective leadership and further strengthen the global non-proliferation regime.
