ISLAMABAD: In the last three and a half years, Pakistan Railways has carved an impressive niche for itself in revenue generation, accumulating a substantial sum of Rs 6,340,156 million. This feat was achieved by optimizing 23 saloons and inspection coaches for commercial purposes.

These distinguished carriages are typically reserved for various dignitaries of the country, but their potential transcends mere ceremonial purposes. Among these exclusive coaches, two have been assigned for the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, while four are earmarked for the Minister for Railways, the Secretary/Chairman of Railways, and another high-ranking official within the ministry.

Further allocation includes one saloon for the federal government and individual carriages for the Governors of Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and the respective provincial governments. The Railway Headquarters in Lahore has received a fair share, with eight saloons designated for the Chief Executive Officer/General Manager (BS-22), Additional General Manager (BS-21), Inspector General of Railway Police, Federal Government Inspector, and four principal officers.

Additionally, six saloons are at the disposal of Divisional Superintendents in Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Sukkur, Lahore, and Karachi. These well-appointed saloons, replete with two rooms, a bath, a dining area, and a compact kitchen, offer luxurious accommodations. Notably, some of these carriages also serve as inspection coaches, featuring a glass back wall that provides an unparalleled view of the track and the surrounding terrain.

It’s important to note that Pakistan Railways officers are permitted to utilize these saloons or inspection coaches exclusively during duty assignments. These carriages, while luxurious, are aging, with most being over four decades old. Furthermore, the railways offer the opportunity for private travel by renting these luxury saloons.

The revenue generated through these saloons is a testament to Pakistan Railways’ commitment to optimizing its resources while also preserving a touch of grandeur and nostalgia associated with rail travel.
