ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has earned Rs41 billion in the first six months of the current fiscal year 2023-24 despite facing the major challenges of floods during financial crunch and monsoon season, official media reported on Tuesday.
During the first 6 months of the fiscal year 2022-23, Pakistan Railway had generated Rs28 billion which reflected 46 % increase in the revenues during the same period in the fiscal year 2023-24, a top official told APP.
As per the figures, the official said that out of the revenue of Rs41 billion, earnings from passenger trains were recorded at Rs24 billion whereas the freight sector also managed to earn Rs11 billion in the same period.
Pakistan Railways Earn Rs 41 bln in 6 Months
The official maintained that other sectors of the department also added about Rs5.5 billion to the total revenue generation.
At present, the official said that Pakistan Railways is operating about 96 passenger trains, up from the last year when 86 trains were running. During the last year, on average it operated 3.75 freight trains while the number reached 7 freight trains in the current year.
He added the department also emphasized that the issue of delay in payment of salaries to staff has now been addressed and things will be more streamlined, once work on the Mainline-I project starts.
The official maintained that owing to inflationary pressures, led by high fuel costs, Railways has increased its fares, both for passenger and freight that would help the cash-strapped corporation to fetch better incomes in the next few months.
He further said that their staff is continuously monitoring the railway tracks the countrywide and conducting thorough inspection of the trains as the safety and protection of the passengers is the top priority of Pakistan Railway.
