ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has postponed his scheduled visit to Russia in light of the prevailing regional and domestic situation.
The visit holds significant importance for strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Russia, according to a statement issued by the Media Wing of the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday.
It added that in the current circumstances, it has been decided to defer the trip. The statement added that new dates for the visit will be finalised through mutual consultations at an appropriate time.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was scheduled to visit Russia from 2nd to 5th March 2026.
Sources say that Prime Minister has also called a high-level meeting to review the evolving regional security situation. The session will be attended by senior military officials and heads of intelligence agencies.
The meeting will assess the security environment in Afghanistan, Iran, and other regional states. Key consultations will also take place regarding Pakistan’s policy response in light of recent developments. An official set of guidelines outlining the country’s position is expected to be formulated in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media has confirmed the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Following his passing, the Iranian government has declared a 40-day mourning period.
