ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to promote the creation of safe, sustainable, efficient and environment-friendly transportation system in the South Asian country.
The President expressed these remarks while addressing the Global Sustainable Transport Forum-2024, via a video message, held in Beijing from 25-26 September 2024. Asif Ali Zardari said that Islamabad would work closely with Beijing to achieve the goals of sustainable development that would usher in an era of x prosperity and peace. The President has emphasized that the entire world needed resilient infrastructure for environment-friendly, efficient, and low-carbon transport solutions to fulfil the needs of the people.
The President lauded Beijing’s lead role in promoting and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially recognizing the critical significance of the transport sector.

He told the participants that Islamabad was facing the challenges of sustainable maintenance of its infrastructure as well as the effects of climate change. He also highlighted that over the past five years, devastating floods, rainfall and extreme weather conditions have severely damaged transport infrastructure including roads, rails, bridges in the country that isolated millions of people, especially in rural regions. He said that Pakistan deeply valued Beijing’s role in promoting sustainable development and its contribution to regional and international economic prosperity. The President said that Islamabad extended its support for the development of sustainable transport cooperation among the Transport Authorities of the Member nations and lauded the initiatives taken by China under the leadership of President Xi Jinping.
