Pakistan President for Discouraging Disinformation, Fake News

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has underscored the need to discourage disinformation and the spread of fake news by promoting a culture of fact-checking and verifying information.

According to a statement issued by the President Secretariat Press Wing on Wednesday, the President expressed these views during a meeting with the Chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Muhammad Saleem, who called on him and presented PEMRA Report 2021-23, at the Presidency.

President while talking to the PEMRA Chairman said that the media should uphold the highest standards of journalism and play its role in promoting unity, tolerance, and ethical values in society.

He said that modern communication technologies have opened up new challenges and the media must play a constructive and responsible role in shaping public opinion. He added that a code of conduct regarding the spread of misinformation and propaganda should be followed.

The President emphasized the need to improve the capacity of PEMRA by adopting modern technologies. He said that the media should also raise awareness about socio-economic issues, along with promoting a soft image of the country.

Chairman PEMRA briefed the President about the performance and role of PEMRA in the regulation and development of the media landscape of the country. The President assured his support to further strengthen PEMRA.
