ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Poland reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing political, economic, and defence cooperation through a series of new agreements and understandings during the official visit of Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, to Islamabad.

The visit came at the invitation of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, marking a renewed phase in Islamabad–Warsaw relations.

Both sides issued a joint statement on Friday, highlighting shared aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity in their regions. The Ministers acknowledged the historic ties between the two nations, shaped by the legacy of Polish wartime refugees in Pakistan and the contribution of Polish officers to the foundation of the Pakistan Air Force.

The leaders agreed to maintain regular high-level political dialogue, annual consultations, and stronger parliamentary exchanges. They also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two foreign ministries to enhance diplomatic engagement.

In discussions on global and regional issues, the Polish side briefed Pakistan on the war in Ukraine, while Pakistan reiterated its stance on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Both sides emphasized peaceful conflict resolution in line with the UN Charter, reaffirming respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On the economic front, both Ministers committed to expanding trade and investment, diversifying economic cooperation, and strengthening business-to-business (B2B) links. They acknowledged the longstanding contribution of ORLEN/POGC in Pakistan’s energy sector and agreed to explore new areas such as green technology, agri-processing, and IT collaboration.

Both countries pledged to enhance cooperation in defence, counterterrorism, and cybersecurity, and to counter disinformation and organized crime through shared best practices and capacity-building initiatives.

The ministers reiterated their unequivocal condemnation of terrorism in all its forms. They emphasised that no country should provide safe havens to those involved in planning or supporting terrorist acts, calling for the firm implementation of relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, along with the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

Both sides also agreed to intensify institutional collaboration and intelligence sharing to counter emerging security threats. They recognised disinformation as a hybrid challenge undermining global security and underscored the need for cooperation among relevant institutions and media to combat fake narratives through study visits, workshops, and knowledge exchange.

Furthermore, Pakistan and Poland committed to strengthening coordination in crime prevention, particularly against transnational organised crime, irregular migration, and human trafficking. Both sides stressed the importance of promoting safe and orderly migration in line with international standards, with Poland acknowledging Pakistan’s active cooperation under the EU Readmission Agreement (EURA).

Emphasising education and cultural ties, the two leaders agreed to promote academic exchanges, scientific collaboration, and linkages between think tanks, including a new MoU between the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) and Pakistan’s Institute of Strategic Studies (ISSI).

Concluding the visit, Minister Sikorski expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s warm hospitality and extended an invitation to Minister Dar to visit Poland, reaffirming the shared commitment to a partnership rooted in mutual respect, cooperation, and global peace.
