Pakistan PM Meets World Leaders at SCO Summit in Kazakhstan

ASTANA: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met world leaders at the 24th summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Kazakhstan’s capital.

On the sidelines of the summit, the premier met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on regional issues, climate change, and the UN chief’s visit to Pakistan after the floods in 2022.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Shehbaz met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon, Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov, and Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko. They deliberated on bilateral interests and other mutual concerns.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also participated in the signing of the summit’s declaration titled “Strengthening Multilateral Dialogue – Striving Towards Sustainable Peace and Prosperity.” The summit brought together leaders from Pakistan, China, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, India, and other SCO member states.

Earlier today, addressing the SCO Summit, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to working together with other member nations to strengthen the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as an active and integrated regional forum to achieve common objectives of peace and prosperity.

Yesterday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, visiting Kazakhstan, called for enhancing trilateral cooperation among Pakistan, Turkiye, and Azerbaijan in multiple sectors.

The premier made these remarks during a tripartite meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the need to develop strategies to bolster trilateral cooperation in various areas, such as economy, energy, tourism, meteorology, culture, education, and information technology.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its strong relationships with Turkiye and Azerbaijan.

The leaders engaged in detailed discussions on mutual interests, as well as regional and global peace and prosperity.

Earlier, the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Turkiye, and Azerbaijan had also held a round of tripartite talks.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday met with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan on the sidelines of the SCO Summit being held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

During the meeting held on Wednesday, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the multifaceted relations between Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister also held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed bilateral ties and matters of mutual interest.
