SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and expressed satisfaction over the ceasefire in Gaza, hoping it would prove to be a major step toward lasting peace and the future development of the Palestinian people.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Peace Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, which was later joined by Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, state-run news agency APP reported.
Shehbaz Sharif, during the interaction, reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
President Abbas expressed sincere gratitude to Pakistan for its consistent support of the Palestinian people and its firm advocacy on both political and diplomatic fronts.
The two leaders held an informal meeting ahead of the ceasefire signing ceremony, engaging in a cordial exchange of views. They praised the historic and fraternal ties between Pakistan and Palestine, describing them as a source of pride for both nations and their peoples.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the brave people of Gaza for their courage and endurance in the face of immense hardship over the years. Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the ceasefire in Gaza, calling it a vital step toward lasting peace and the future development of the Palestinian people.
Earlier, PM Sharif praised US President Donald Trump’s role in brokering the landmark Gaza peace agreement, calling it a decisive step toward ending years of bloodshed and paving the way for a lasting peace in the Middle East.
In a post on the social media platform X after arriving in Sharm El-Sheikh to attend the deal’s signing ceremony, Sharif expressed gratitude to co-hosts Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and President Trump, crediting the American leader’s “outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment” for bringing the warring sides to an agreement.
“Grateful to our co-hosts, President El Sisi and President Trump. We would not have seen this moment without President Trump’s outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment,” Sharif said. “It took his single-minded pursuit of peace to end the needless killing and destruction,” he wrote.
