ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to develop a comprehensive action plan for exporting surplus food items to Gulf countries, while ensuring that domestic food requirements are fully met.
At a meeting chaired by the prime minister on Sunday in Lahore, officials reviewed the nation’s food security situation and discussed strategies for boosting exports of surplus food products to Gulf markets amid shifting regional dynamics.
The directives come at a time of heightened global uncertainty, including the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has impacted supply chains and regional trade flows.
PM Shehbaz Sharif stressed that close monitoring of domestic demand and supply was essential to guarantee that Pakistan’s citizens face no shortage of essential commodities.
Highlighting the opportunities created by disruptions in global supply chains, he said that Pakistani products now have greater export potential in the region.

The prime minister emphasised maintaining high quality and safety standards for all exports to Gulf countries, describing them as “brotherly nations.”
He also instructed the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to take all necessary measures to facilitate smooth and efficient export operations via maritime routes.
Officials briefed the prime minister on current stocks and production levels, confirming that Pakistan has sufficient supplies across key sectors.
The meeting noted that Pakistan’s agricultural industry—including crops, meat, poultry, dairy, and seafood—has significant potential for exports, both in terms of volume and value.
PM Shehbaz Sharif directed the formation of a daily monitoring committee to track the situation closely.
He also instructed Pakistani ambassadors and trade officers in Gulf countries to proactively promote Pakistani products and identify new market opportunities.
In addition, the prime minister called for exploring value-added and processed food exports, such as packaged fruits, dairy products, and ready-to-cook items, to increase revenue and strengthen Pakistan’s presence in Gulf markets.
He highlighted that leveraging advanced logistics, cold chain facilities, and streamlined customs procedures would be key to ensuring timely deliveries.
Officials were tasked with preparing a detailed roadmap for short-term and long-term export strategies, including identifying priority markets, coordinating with exporters, and ensuring alignment with Pakistan’s overall trade and economic goals.
