MUZAFFARABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived on Friday to interact and express solidarity with the people of the northern parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) hit by the heavy rains and snowfall.

The prime minister will distribute checks among the affected people as part of the relief assistance announced by the government. He will also meet with the AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar ul Haq, who received him on his arrival in Muzaffarabad.

Heavy rains in AJK, other parts

Like many other parts of the country, AJK witnessed heavy rains and snowfall in recent days. Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Despite its minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, its geographical location exposes it to major climate change risks, including glacial melt, sea-level rise, heatwaves and extreme weather events such as the destructive monsoon floods in 2022.
