ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday approved Pakistan’s Halal meat export policy and directed authorities to present a comprehensive three-year strategy to boost exports within the next two weeks.

Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister stressed that close coordination among relevant federal ministries and provincial governments was essential to secure Pakistan’s share in the global Halal meat market, particularly across Muslim countries, Radio Pakistan reported.

He instructed the committee tasked with expanding Halal meat exports to put forward practical recommendations to improve production, cold storage, certification, and supply-chain efficiency. Special measures, he said, should be taken to raise livestock production in line with international standards and regional benchmarks.

Emphasising the need for coordinated centres involving both federal and provincial governments, Shehbaz Sharif said such facilities were critical to enhancing the quality and nutritional value of Halal meat. He also assured full government support for international certification of existing slaughterhouses and their bilateral registration with importing countries.

The prime minister underlined the importance of ensuring disease-free facilities and maintaining hygiene and cleanliness standards in line with global requirements, adding that export-oriented business models should be developed using internationally recognised best practices.

The meeting was informed that Pakistan’s total Halal meat production stands at around six million metric tonnes, with sufficient surplus available for export after meeting domestic demand. Officials also briefed the prime minister on steps being taken to increase production and ensure globally compliant packaging standards.
