ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) on Thursday issued a high-alert weather advisory, warning of extreme weather conditions expected to affect various parts of the country on Friday and Saturday, including the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
According to the NEOC, heavy rainfall, strong windstorms, thunderstorms, and isolated hailstorms are forecast from the evening of April 18 to April 19.
The advisory highlights that severe weather could disrupt infrastructure, transport services, and agricultural activity, particularly in Punjab.
The alert covers the Potohar region—comprising Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, and Jhelum—as well as Central Punjab districts including Faisalabad, Hafizabad, Jhang, Khushab, Mianwali, Lahore, Narowal, Sahiwal, Sargodha, and Sheikhupura.
The NEOC warned that “strong winds and heavy rain may uproot trees, potentially causing temporary power outages,” while windstorms and hailstorms may damage weak structures, rooftops, vehicles, and power infrastructure.
Hail also poses a risk to standing crops and outdoor structures with glass surfaces.
On Wednesday, at least three people lost their lives in Rawalpindi and Gujar Khan due to an intense hailstorm that struck the region, accompanied by torrential rain and gusty winds.
The storm caused significant damage to vehicles, solar panels, and buildings, and triggered flash floods in low-lying areas.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department had issued an alert for the Potohar region, warning that severe weather may lead to reduced visibility due to dust and rain.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.
Residents, particularly those in vulnerable areas, have been advised to secure loose objects, stay indoors during storms, and avoid unnecessary travel.
Tourists and travellers are strongly advised to check road conditions before setting out and to postpone non-essential journeys during intense weather.
People living in landslide-prone areas must exercise increased caution and follow all safety directives issued by local authorities.
The NDMA urged citizens to stay informed through official channels and to download the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application for real-time updates.
