ISLAMABAD: World Braille Day was observed on Thursday in Pakistan, joining the global initiative to highlight the importance of enhancing access to knowledge for visually impaired people. The theme for the 2024 World Braille Day was ‘Empowering Through Inclusion and Diversity.’
Pakistan’s President Dr. Arif Alvi, in his message on the occasion, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities.
He highlighted that Pakistan has endorsed the Marrakesh Treaty for visually impaired individuals, a move aimed at facilitating their access to millions of books in Braille.
President Alvi also noted that Pakistan has initiated advanced training programs benefiting students, educators, and parents. These programs aim to create an inclusive environment in public spaces, ensuring that individuals with visual impairments can seamlessly access vital information and education.
World Braille Day is observed annually on January 4 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille writing system for blind and visually impaired individuals.
Despite the advancements in technology and systems, people with visual impairments and blindness still encounter significant challenges in leading independent lives.
The primary objective of World Braille Day is to promote Braille literacy and raise awareness about its crucial role in facilitating accessibility and independence for visually impaired individuals.
