Pakistan, Myanmar Think Tanks Sign Working Protocol for Collaboration

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) and the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (MISIS) signed a Working Protocol today, aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two think tanks.

The virtual signing ceremony, attended by the Myanmar Ambassador in Islamabad and Pakistan’s Chargé d’Affaires in Yangon, marks a significant milestone in fostering cooperation.

Dr. Khurram Abbas, Director of the India Study Centre at ISSI, moderated the event, and highlighted that the Protocol reflects the commitment of both institutions to develop joint research and provide policy advice on mutual interests.

In his remarks, DG ISSI Ambassador Sohail Mahmood emphasized the importance of this partnership amid a rapidly evolving international landscape. He said that robust research and scholarly cooperation are essential for understanding global changes and their implications.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s long-standing relationship with Myanmar, which encompasses decades of diplomatic, economic, security, and cultural collaboration. The Protocol is part of ISSI’s broader initiative to strengthen ties with think tanks in ASEAN member states and acknowledges the valuable contributions of the embassies in establishing the ASEAN Corner at ISSI.

Ambassador U Thant Kyaw, Chairman of MISIS, expressed gratitude for the efforts that led to the signing of the Protocol, describing it as a symbol of mutual respect and trust, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation and joint research.

Myanmar’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Wunna Han, called the signing a milestone in bilateral relations and emphasized that the Protocol will promote collaborative research projects, reflecting the positive trajectory of Pakistan-Myanmar ties. He also recognized the crucial role think tanks play in shaping policy directions.

Pakistan’s Chargé d’Affaires in Yangon, Mr. Anwar Zeb, reiterated the Pakistan Mission’s commitment to supporting collaboration between ISSI and MISIS. He emphasized the importance of think tank cooperation in advancing bilateral relations and assured continued support for future initiatives.

The Protocol establishes a framework for collaborative activities, including researcher and data exchanges, joint events, and research projects addressing pressing regional issues. Both institutions will designate focal points to coordinate collaborative projects and share relevant publications.

The signing ceremony concluded with a reaffirmation of mutual commitment to exploring new avenues for academic and research cooperation, contributing to a deeper understanding of regional and international issues.
